PostHeaderIcon Chapter One draft - Primoris

This is the first chapter of a high fantasy book that I am writing.  It has not been edited and I have to warn you that it is for mature readers who are not adverse to descriptive death scenes.

Overview: A mentally ill person uses an incomplete ritual to summon a monster to kill political enemies in the United States. The barely constrained monster's path of destruction intersects with a group of friends whose reactions set off a chain of events that affect their futures and the whole planet.

The battle began, the flights were launched as the horses ran.  The banners unfurled, snapping and popping.

Iron men on iron shrouded mounts with long metal lances canting, screaming to the clear sky as their war dogs ran panting.  Their shields held loosely, they charged with no thought of stopping.

Infantry Training School was uneventful for the most part other than I learned more about the Marine Corps. One of the things that I learned was that I have an aversion to marching arm-in-arm to my death. Of course I'm exaggerating but such was the state of my mind when a tall Captain in dress uniform and a chest full of medals approached my platoon.

This Captain had a proposition for us. He said that he was recruiting for a special unit that required a special type of person. In a nutshell this unit was different than other Marine Corps units in that it used small teams of four to infiltrate enemy positions and scout. If everything worked correctly the teams would never be seen but would have a significant impact against the enemy.
